THE ULTIMATE V60 BREWING GUIDE

THE ULTIMATE V60 BREWING GUIDE

The V60 has become one of the most loved brewing methods in specialty coffee because of its ability to produce a clean, vibrant, and expressive cup. Designed by Hario in Japan, the cone-shaped dripper uses a 60-degree angle, spiral ridges, and paper filters to create exceptional clarity and balance in the cup. Unlike immersion methods such as the French Press, the V60 highlights delicate flavor notes, sweetness, and acidity with remarkable precision. At Old Man Coffee Roasters, we love using the V60 because it allows every coffee to fully express its origin character — from juicy Kenyan coffees and floral Ethiopians to sweet, chocolatey Colombian profiles.

Brewing a great V60 at home is simple once you understand the fundamentals. Start with freshly roasted specialty coffee, filtered water, a burr grinder, a digital scale, and a gooseneck kettle for better pouring control. A reliable starting recipe is 15g of coffee to 250g of water at 92–94°C with a total brew time of around 2:30–3:00 minutes. Begin by rinsing the paper filter with hot water to remove any paper taste and preheat the brewer. Add your ground coffee, then pour approximately 40g of water for the bloom phase and allow it to rest for 30–45 seconds. Continue pouring slowly in circular motions until reaching the total brew weight, keeping the water flow steady and controlled throughout the brew.

One of the most important factors in V60 brewing is grind size. If the coffee tastes bitter, harsh, or dries out your mouth, the grind is likely too fine and causing overextraction. If the cup tastes weak, sour, or watery, the grind may be too coarse. Small grind adjustments can dramatically improve sweetness, balance, and clarity. Water quality also plays a major role since coffee is mostly water — filtered water will usually produce cleaner and sweeter results than hard or chlorinated tap water. Consistency is essential when brewing pour over coffee, so weighing your coffee and water, controlling your pouring speed, and keeping notes while dialing in recipes can significantly improve your results over time.

The V60 is more than just a brewing method — it’s a ritual that allows coffee lovers to slow down and fully appreciate the complexity of specialty coffee. It works especially well with light and medium roasted coffees that showcase fruit, florals, citrus, and layered sweetness. At Old Man Coffee Roasters, we carefully roast our coffees to highlight clarity, balance, and origin character, making them perfect for V60 brewing. Whether you’re just starting your pour over journey or refining your technique, the V60 offers one of the most rewarding and flavorful coffee experiences you can create at home.
